Sometimes after uninstalling older versions of Microsoft Office some registry keys are left behind. This causes Spiceworks to think that those older versions of Office are still installed, even though the actual program files are all removed. You can follow the steps here to clean up those old registry keys so Spiceworks can get a proper inventory of the software on the machine.

4 Steps total

Step 1: Open up RegEdit

Open up RegEdit by going to Start>Run and typing 'regedit' and pressing Enter or OK. You can also enter the 'regedit' command into a Command Prompt to open up the editor.

Step 2: Locate the Office Registry Key

Microsoft stores all of the installation information for Office Products in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice. Underneath this key you will see various version numbers, each corresponding to different versions of Office. They are as follows:

-9.0 is Office 2000
-10.0 is Office XP
-11.0 is Office 2003
-12.0 is Office 2007
-14.0 is Office 2010

Step 3: Locate the Corresponding Registration Key

Underneath each of the version number keys you should see a 'Registration' key. Depending on how many Office products you have installed (Visio, Project, etc. all will be stored underneath one of those version keys) on the machine there will be multiple hashed keys present underneath the Registration key. Each of these hashed keys should have a value underneath it called 'ProductName'. You can use this value to correctly determine which hashed key is related to the product you want to remove.

Microsoft word files are not saving mac files. The new Excel files are still saving fine at this stage, butI've just started getting the same error message again when trying to save new Word documents.I have plenty of storage space, and I can't see any issue with the permissions. After a bit of troubleshooting I tried relocating all my document files to a new file location, which worked for a time, and enabled me to save new Word and Excel files.

Step 4: Delete the Hashed Key

Once you have located the correct hashed registry key, delete it. As mentioned above, though, make sure you have a good backup before doing this!

Once you have performed the steps above run a scan on the device by either running a full network scan or a rescan underneath the Tools section of the device. Once the scan is complete you should see that the long deleted Office products are now gone from your Spiceworks Inventory. If the scan is still showing that the software is present, you might need to disable Incremental Scanning in Settings>Network Scan.

  Thank you for this! I've started doing Office upgrades on our workstation, and it was driving me crazy that my Spiceworks inventory showed multiple versions installed on a machine when there clearly was not.

Yesterday, we showed you how to create a custom service using Automator for easily resizing images via the Finder. Today, we’ll show you how to find the location of the custom services that you create in order to remove them. We’ll also show you how to enable or disable Services using System Preferences.

When adding a custom service via Automator, OS X doesn’t clue the user in as to the location of said service. In fact, the save dialogue is about as ambiguous as it gets.

You aren’t allowed to browse for a location like you normally can when saving files in OS X. You can click Save or Cancel, that’s it. Once you give your service a name and click Save, it goes somewhere, but it’s not clear as to where.

Fortunately, there is a user-accessible location for all custom services created with Automator. That location can be found in the Services folder which sits directly beneath the user’s Library folder. Makes sense, no?

How to delete a custom service

To access the Services folder, open Finder, and click Go → Go To Folder, and paste the following:

~/Library/Services

Click Go, and you should be taken to the Services folder housing all of your custom services. From there, it’s as simple as dragging the service to the trash to get rid of it. Deleting custom services will remove the name of the service from within the Services section of the Control + click (right click) dialog and from Finder’s Services menu in the menu bar.

How to disable a service

If you’re looking to take a less permanent approach, it might be better to simply disable the service. To do so, open System Preferences → Keyboard → Shortcuts, and click the Services section on the left. From there, it’s just a matter of unchecking the name of your custom service. This will remove it from the right-click dialogue and the Services menu in Finder. The nice thing about disabling a service is that you can always enable it again.

We’re just scratching the surface when it comes to Services. As you can see from the Keyboard panel in System Preferences, you can do cool things like add shortcuts to services, enable additional services, and much more. Needless to say, we’ll be back with more coverage on services in the future.
