Dec 10, 2019  If installing Windows on your Mac for the first time, use a full version of Windows, not an upgrade. If your copy of Windows came on a USB flash drive, or you have a Windows product key and no installation disc, download a Windows 10 disk image from Microsoft.

Office 2010 will reach its end of support on October 13, 2020. If you haven't already begun to upgrade your Office 2010 environment, we recommend you start now.

Also, support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. Even though Office 2010 is still supported until October, Windows 7 will no longer receive security updates after January 2020, unless you purchase Extended Security Updates (ESU). Without ESU, Windows 7 is vulnerable to security threats. For more information, see the Windows 7 end of support site and Lifecycle FAQ-Extended Security Updates.

This article provides recommendations, information, and links to help administrators and IT Pros in large enterprises plan their upgrades to Office 365 ProPlus.

What does end of support mean?

Office 2010, like almost all Microsoft products, has a support lifecycle during which we provide bug fixes and security fixes. This lifecycle lasts for a certain number of years from the date of the product's initial release. For Office 2010, the support lifecycle is 10 years. The end of this lifecycle is known as the product's end of support. When Office 2010 reaches its end of support on October 13, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

  • Technical support for issues

  • Bug fixes for issues that are discovered

  • Security fixes for vulnerabilities that are discovered

Because of the changes listed above, we strongly recommend that you upgrade as soon as possible.

What are my options?

With Office 2010 reaching its end of support, this is a good time to explore your options and prepare an upgrade plan to either of these latest versions of Office:

  • Office 365 ProPlus, the subscription version of Office that comes with most Office 365 enterprise plans.

  • Office 2019, which is sold as a one-time purchase and available for one computer per license.

A key difference between Office 365 ProPlus and Office 2019 is that Office 365 ProPlus is updated on a regular basis, as often as monthly, with new features. Office 2019 only has the same features that it had when it was released in October 2018.

This article provides guidance on upgrading to Office 365 ProPlus.

What is Office 365? What is Office 365 ProPlus?

Office 365 provides subscription plans that include access to Office applications and other cloud services, including Skype for Business, Exchange Online, and OneDrive for Business. Office 365 ProPlus is the version of Office that comes with most Office 365 enterprise plans. Office 365 ProPlus includes the full versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, Access, and Skype for Business installed on your client computers.

Unlike Office 2010, Office 365 ProPlus uses a user-based licensing model that allows people to install Office on up to 5 PCs or Macs and on their mobile devices. There are also differences in how you deploy, license, and activate Office 365 ProPlus compared to Office 2010. For more information about Office 365 ProPlus, see the following information:

Review what's changed since Office 2010

Review the system requirements for Office 365 ProPlus

Before upgrading to Office 365 ProPlus, verify that your client computers meet or exceed the minimum system requirements.

In addition, you should review the system requirements for your Office server workloads. For more information, see Exchange Server Supportability Matrix and System Requirements for Office server products.

Plan for Office 365

Because Office 365 ProPlus comes with most enterprise Office 365 plans, you should review your current Office 365 capabilities as part of planning an upgrade to Office 365 ProPlus. Prior to deploying Office 365 ProPlus, for example, you should ensure that all your users have Office 365 accounts and licenses. Assess application compatibility

Before deploying Office 365 ProPlus, you may want to test your business-critical VBA macros, third-party add-ins, and complex documents and spreadsheets to assess their compatibility with Office 365 ProPlus. For more information, see Assess application compatibility.

To help with assessing application compatibility with Office 365 ProPlus, we recommend using the Readiness Toolkit for Office add-ins and VBA. The Readiness Toolkit includes the Readiness Report Creator, which creates an Excel report with VBA macro compatibility and add-in readiness information to help your enterprise assess its readiness to move to Office 365 ProPlus.

Assess your infrastructure and environment

To decide how to upgrade to Office 365 ProPlus, you should evaluate your infrastructure and environment, including the following:

  • Number and distribution of your clients, including required languages.

  • IT infrastructure, including operating systems, mobile device support, user permissions and management, and software distribution methods.

  • Network infrastructure, including connections to the Internet and internal software distribution points.

  • Cloud infrastructure, including existing Office 365 capabilities, user licensing, and identity.

Review new Group Policy settings

As with any new version of Office, there are new Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) for Group Policy settings. All Group Policy settings for Office 365 ProPlus are now located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftOffice16.0 and HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftOffice16.0.

You can download the Administrative Template files (ADMX/ADML) for Group Policy settings for Office 365 ProPlus from the Microsoft Download Center for free. The download includes an Excel file that lists all the Group Policy settings and the new policy settings for Office 365 ProPlus.

Choose how you want to deploy Office 365 ProPlus

You can deploy Office 365 ProPlus from the cloud, from a local source on your network, or with Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (or another software distribution solution). Which option you choose depends on your environment and business requirements. Deploying from the cloud, for example, minimizes your administrative overhead, but could require more network bandwidth. Deploying with Configuration Manager or from a local source, on the other hand, offers more granular control over the deployment of Office 365 ProPlus, including which applications and languages are installed on which client computers.

Choose how often to update Office

With Office 365 ProPlus, you can control how frequently your users receive feature updates to their Office applications. For more information, see Overview of update channels for Office 365 ProPlus.

Plan for additional languages

You can install language accessory packs after you've deployed Office 365 ProPlusin one of its base languages. There are two ways to install language accessory packs:

  • Have your users download and install the language accessory packs that they need from the Office 365 portal.

  • Use the Office Deployment Tool to deploy the appropriate language accessory packs to your users.

Special considerations

The Office Customization Tool is not used as part of the Office 365 ProPlus installation. Instead, you can customize the installation for your users with the Office Deployment Tool. For more information, see Overview of the Office Deployment Tool.

Removal of InfoPath from Office 365 ProPlus. InfoPath 2013 remains the current version and therefore isn't included in Office 365 ProPlus. When you upgrade an existing installation of Office 2010 to Office 365 ProPlus, InfoPath is removed from the computer. If your users still need to use InfoPath, the 2013 version of InfoPath is available for installation on the Software page in the Office 365 portal.

Configuration Manager supports installing client software on Windows and macOS computers.

General requirements and limitations

Review the following requirements and limitations for all clients:

  • Changing the startup type or Log on as settings for any Configuration Manager service isn't supported. This change can prevent key services from running correctly.

Windows computers

To manage the following Windows OS versions, use the client that's included with Configuration Manager. For more information, see How to deploy clients to Windows computers.

Supported client OS versions

  • Windows 10

    For more detailed information, see Support for Windows 10.

  • Windows 8.1 (x86, x64): Professional, Enterprise

Windows Virtual Desktop

Windows Virtual Desktop is a desktop and app virtualization service that runs on Microsoft Azure. Starting in version 1906, use Configuration Manager to manage these virtual devices running Windows in Azure.

Similar to a terminal server, some of these virtual devices allow multiple concurrent active user sessions. To help with client performance, Configuration Manager now disables user policies on any device that allows these multiple user sessions. Even if you enable user policies, the client disables them by default on these devices, which include Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session and terminal servers.

The client only disables user policy when it detects this type of device during a new installation. For an existing client of this type that you update to this version, the previous behavior persists. On an existing device, it configures the user policy setting even if it detects that the device allows multiple user sessions.

If you require user policy in this scenario, and accept any potential performance impact, use one of the following methods to enable user policy:

  • In version 1910 and later, use client settings. In the Client Policy group, configure the following setting: Enable user policy for multiple user sessions.

  • In version 1906, use the Configuration Manager SDK with the SMS_PolicyAgentConfig server WMI class. Set the new PolicyEnableUserPolicyOnTS property to true.

Note

You can't use co-management with a client running Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session.

Server Core

The following versions specifically refer to the Server Core installation of the OS. Note 3

Windows Server semi-annual channel versions are Server Core installations, such as Windows Server, version 1809. As a Configuration Manager client, they're supported the same as the associated Windows 10 semi-annual channel version. For more information, see Support for Windows 10.

Configuration Manager tests and supports Windows Server Datacenter editions, but isn't officially certified for Windows Server. Configuration Manager hotfix support isn't offered for issues that are specific to Windows Server Datacenter Edition. Windows Embedded computers

Manage Windows Embedded devices by installing the Configuration Manager client on the device. For more information, see Planning for client deployment to Windows Embedded devices.

Requirements and limitations

  • All client features are supported on Windows Embedded systems that don't have write filters enabled.

  • Clients that use one of the following are supported for all features except power management:

    • Enhanced Write Filters (EWF)

    • RAM File-Based Write Filters (FBWF)

    • Unified Write Filters (UWF)

  • The application catalog isn't supported for any Windows Embedded device.

  • Windows 10 Enterprise (x86, x64)

  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise (x86, x64)
    This version includes the long-term servicing channel (LTSC). For more information, see Overview of Windows 10 IoT Enterprise.

Windows CE computers

Manage Windows CE devices with the Configuration Manager mobile device legacy client that is included with Configuration Manager.

Requirements and limitations

  • The mobile device client requires 0.78 MB of storage space for installation. Sign-in can require up to 256 KB of additional storage space.

  • Features for these mobile devices vary by platform and client type. For information about which management functions are supported, see Choose a device management solution.

Supported OS versions

  • Windows CE 7.0 (ARM and x86 processors)

    Note

    Support is deprecated for Windows CE 7.0 in Configuration Manager. For more information, see Removed and deprecated items for Configuration Manager clients.

Supported languages include

  • German

  • Italian

  • Japanese

  • Korean

  • Portuguese (Brazil)

  • Russian

    The utility to extendthe license is included within the Office 2013 trial installation, and doesrequire, but you can also do it through third party tools. Uninstall microsoft office mac 2011. No such luck for Office for Mac usersthough – looks like the only way to get a trial of that version is through a trial of Office 365 Home.Apparently, Microsoft has provided an option to extend the trial period of Microsoft Office to 180 days.

Extended Security Updates and Configuration Manager

The Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is a last resort option for customers who need to run certain legacy Microsoft products past the end of support. For example, Windows 7. It includes Critical and/or Important security updates (as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC)) for a maximum of three years after the product’s End of Extended Support date.

Products that are beyond their support lifecycle aren't supported for use with Configuration Manager. This includes any products that are covered under the ESU program. Security updates released under the ESU program will be published to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). These updates will appear in the Configuration Manager console. While products that are covered under the ESU program are no longer supported for use with Configuration Manager, the latest released version of Configuration Manager current branch can be used to deploy and install Windows security updates released under the program. The latest released version can also be used to deploy Windows 10 to devices running Windows 7.

Client management features not related to Windows software update management or OS deployment will no longer be tested on the operating systems covered under the ESU program and we don't guarantee that they'll continue to function. It's highly recommended to upgrade or migrate to a current version of the operating systems as soon as possible to receive client management support.

Mac computers

Manage Apple Mac computers with the Configuration Manager client for macOS.

The macOS client installation package isn't supplied with the Configuration Manager media. Download it from the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager - macOS Client (64-bit).

Requirements and limitations

  • Installing or running the Configuration Manager client for macOS on computers under an account other than root isn't supported. Doing so can prevent key services from running correctly.

Supported versions

  • macOS Catalina (10.15) (requires Configuration Manager site version 1910 or later, and Configuration Manager client for macOS version 5.0.8742.1000 or later)

  • macOS Mojave (10.14)

  • macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Linux and UNIX servers

Important

Configuration Manager version 1902 drops support for Linux and UNIX as a client. Deprecation was announced with version 1802. Consider Microsoft Azure Management for managing Linux servers. Azure solutions have extensive Linux support that in most cases exceed Configuration Manager functionality, including end-to-end patch management for Linux.

Microsoft Office Mac

The Linux and UNIX client installation packages aren't supplied with the Configuration Manager media. Download the Clients for Additional Operating Systems from the Microsoft Download Center. In addition to client installation packages, the client download includes the script that manages the installation of the client on each computer.

Requirements and limitations

  • To review OS file dependencies for the client for Linux and UNIX, see Prerequisites for client deployment to Linux and UNIX servers.

  • For an overview of supported management capabilities for Linux or UNIX, see How to deploy clients to UNIX and Linux servers.

  • For supported versions of Linux and UNIX, the listed version includes all subsequent minor versions. For example, CentOS version 6 includes CentOS 6.3. Similarly, support for an OS that uses service packs (such as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1) includes subsequent service packs for that OS version.

I recall that there was a Microsoft Keyboard icon in the System Preferences on my old computer that allowed me to adjust the sensitivity.
