I think you can take that to mean that Microsoft has no intention of creating a new Silverlight plugin for Chrome that does not rely on NPAPI. In other words, Chrome will likely never support Silverlight again. NPAPI was completely removed from Chrome in version 45 released on Sept. Looking to enable Silverlight in Google Chrome 42 and higher? Did you start seeing This plug-in is not supported after upgrading Chrome? So did everyone else who uses Chrome to view Silverlight content in their web browser.

Google recently updated its Chrome web browser to version 42. One impact of the release of Chrome 42 was the disabling of some historically problematic browser plug-ins by default. Plug-ins, such as Silverlight from Microsoft, and Java from Oracle, use an API from the 1990s called Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI). The issue you have encountered is that Google Chrome 42 (and higher) has disabled NPAPI by default, and with it, the Silverlight plug-in (in addition to other plug-ins). With the updated browser, when you visit web pages with Silverlight content, you see a gray area with a puzzle piece display in its place instead. Mouse-over the gray area, and the message This plug-in is not supported accompanies it.

A quick and easy work-around exists to restore NPAPI to Google Chrome by default. To make your Silverlight content available, just follow these steps.

Enable NPAPI Plug-ins

1. Upgrade to Google Chrome 42 (or the latest version up to Chrome 44). NPAPI is enabled by default in Chrome 41 and earlier. Please note that this option is no longer present in Google Chrome 45 or later. SeeHow to use Java (also an NPAPI plugin like Silverlight) in Google Chrome 45+ for more information.

2. In a Google Chrome window, type or copy/paste this line into the address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

Click the Enable link under Enable NPAPI Mac, Windows.

3. For your change to take effect, click the Relaunch Now button at the base of the page.

Once Google Chrome relaunches, the Silverlight content will display once again in the browser window. The plug-ins will still be subject to the previous blocking restrictions you may have encountered with Chrome in the past. You may need to give the plug-ins permission to run even with NPAPI enabled.

To disable NPAPI again if needed, return to the chrome://flags/#enable-npapi page, and click the Disable link under Enable NPAPI Mac, Windows.

But consider yourself forewarned. As of the publication date of this article, the work-around will only be an option until September 2015. At that point, the ability to enable and disable NPAPI is scheduled for removal from Google Chrome for good. At that stage, the only recourse will be to use alternative web browsers that support NPAPI, or use the free IE Tab extension.

Supported Samsung Knox Standard devices

To avoid Knox activation errors that prevent MDM enrollment, the Company Portal app only attempts Samsung Knox activation during MDM enrollment if the device appears in the list of supported Knox devices. Devices that don't support Samsung Knox activation enroll as standard Android devices. A Samsung device might have some model numbers that support Knox, while others don't. Verify Knox compatibility with your device reseller before you buy and deploy Samsung devices.

Note

Enrolling Samsung Knox devices may require you to enable access to Samsung servers.

The following list of Samsung device models do not support Knox. They are enrolled as native Android devices by the Company Portal app for Android:

Windows PC software client

An Intune software client can be deployed and installed on Windows PCs as an alternate enrollment method. This functionality is only available using the Intune classic portal. You can use the Intune software client to manage 10 and later PCs with the exception of Windows 10 Home edition.

Note

Microsoft announced that Windows 7 support ends on January 14th 2020. On this date, Intune also retires support for devices running Windows 7.

Microsoft Intune will retire support for the Silverlight-based Intune console on October 15, 2020. This retirement includes ending support for the Silverlight console configured PC software client (also known as the PC agent).

Intune supported web browsers

Different administrative tasks require that you use one of the following administrative websites.

The following browsers are supported for these portals:

• Microsoft Edge (latest version)
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 11
• Safari (latest version, Mac only)
• Chrome (latest version)
• Firefox (latest version)

Intune classic portal

The Intune classic portal is only used for managing devices enrolled with the Intune PC software client (https://manage.microsoft.com). The Intune classic portal requires Silverlight browser support.

The following Silverlight browsers support the Intune console:

• Internet Explorer 10 or later
• Google Chrome (versions prior to version 42)
• Mozilla Firefox with Silverlight enabled (versions prior to version 56)

Note

Mac Chrome Silverlight

Microsoft Edge and mobile browsers are not supported for the Intune classic portal because they do not support Microsoft Silverlight.

Microsoft Silverlight Mac

Only users with service administrator permissions or tenant administrators with the global administrator role can sign in to this portal. To access the administration console, your account must have a license to use Intune and a sign-in status of Allowed.
